Background
I trained as midwife after the births of my older
children stimulated a huge interest in the way women undertook
the transition through pregnancy and birth into motherhood
and how they adapted to a new and very different phase of life.
My experience of both births in hospital and at home made me consider
that a less technological way of birth was a positive choice for many
women and babies. I have worked as an independent midwife for nine years
while also having worked in obstetric and midwife led settings
I believe my role as a midwife is to enter into a dialogue with women to
explore their hopes and feelings about pregnancy and birth so that a relationship
of mutual trust can develop from which we may form a plan of care together.
I have attended births at home and accompanied women to birth in hospital
if they wish me to do so. I can also provide antenatal and postnatal care
and support with breastfeeding.
Plan of care
This is only a guide and is perhaps an average of the care usually given,
it is very important to stress that I have no absolutely fixed routine as
each woman and pregnancy is different, and in some cases you may require
more visits or meetings, and sometimes less.
Antenatal care is provided in your own home and usually most visits take
about an hour, the average number of visits in pregnancy is about 12-13 but
is entirely based on the your needs, length and events of pregnancy.
I attend homebirths on land or in water and while I am on call for births
from around 37-42 weeks use a second midwife colleague for back up in case
of need to whom you would also be introduced.
I visit most days in the first 10 after the birth to provide on going care and
breastfeeding support for you and your baby and routine screening and
examinations in accordance with your wishes. Thereafter I will visit
in the third and fourth weeks and up to six weeks for the final visit.
I provide all necessary equipment and can arrange blood tests, screening
and ultrasound scans if you wish.
